Towards a better tinyhouse

Inventing to freedom?

tinyhouse wiki

I just want to float the ides, which I think I will probably be working on in the future, if someone else doesn’t do it first (which would be awesome), is a wiki for tinyhouses. Actually , given that it’s a wiki, I would probably still be working on it…

There are many wikis that dot the internet, on a wide variety of subjects, not just wikipedia. Consider, for example the thinkpad wiki, and there are of course innumerably more, just search “x Wiki” on the subject.

A wiki would be very useful for people to share information in a much more in-depth (useful) way than either chatting about it, or trying to read up on the issues of concern through the archives of blogs, and a bunch of googling. It doesn’t even have to be encyclopedic information, though of course that’s great where it is available.

For instance, encyclopedia format would be great for insulation options, but then further down the page there can be a space for people to put their personal experiences with various techniques on the same page.

The software used for wikipedia is, I think, open source, and free (as in beer), so there’s tried and true software. I think I recall seeing free hosting services of various sorts for wikis, some might use this software.

Just a few articles I would see being of great interest to people would be:

pros and cons of tinyhouses vs. regular houses (this could be a good way to get the input from a wide variety of people so all the different opinions are there, heck, this could be more than one article: one on the pros and cons from a financial perspective, one on the perspective of the surrounding community, one for the persons using the houses)
financial properties in various jurisdictions, individuals in different regions can add the information for their region
legal environment

A list of the the biggest blogs, in order
water options (immediately practical, and options on the horizon)
heating options
History of Tinyhouses and tinyhouse like things (would be a pretty big topic to cover)
existing tinyhouse projects
existing companies involved (include the tinyhousedesign directory)
related web sites
articles in mainstream media about tinyhouses

  1. I think this is a great idea, and I’d love to see someone do it. I’ve considered (and still continue to noodle over it from time to time) setting one up but a good wiki takes a bit of time to do well and I’m already stretched a little thin.

If you decide to do it let me know and I’ll contribute when I can. Seems like a great way to share and centralize knowledge.
